This essay provided a central idea of life of a ten year old American boy that depicted a middle class child who was on the cusp of his backyard spiderweb, and the entrepreneur that it seems he may become. This essay provides a very detailed look at this boy's life from his views on politics business and girls bringing about different feelings and painting different pictures for each aspect of his life. The essay makes good mention that this is only one boy's life and it's a pretty good life and does not represent a decent majority of people. This child will have a good upbringing and be awarded many opportunities that others will not have. There is a lot of description of the boys views on money, it seems the boy has a slight obsession with it, and the author makes mention of it numerous times, where she is not quite sure how she feels about it. There are mixed feelings those that say that the child is too young to be thinking about such serious things, that he should just be worried about playing and having fun. While on the other hand there is the idea that this child will know what the value of a dollar is and how to manage his money when he gets a job and is able to spend his own income. It painted a picture of a precocious young boy who spends his time playing with friends, despising girls, and making spiderwebs in his backyard, but it never makes a true comparison to any other ten year olds. There are points where it talks about his friends, but at very short detail, just enough to know they are there. Afterwards, all focus goes back to our friend.
There is definitely a lot of relevance to our class with this essay, it incorporates an interview fluidly into an essay. However, it does not have the academic research that our papers will require. The essay portrays a very detailed look at this culture of ten year olds in the suburbs, the essay does a good job at telling you this is brought to you through the eyes of a ten year old, and you can tell that our author has not been at this stage in their life for quite some time.
good pint, pointing out that we can tell the author is a ways away from being a 10 year old. I didn't pick up on that until you mentioned it. Makes for an interesting question... how do we try not to sound like a complete outsider when presenting our communities on paper?

She's given us till 9pm tonight to get it up on here!! Read over mine to get an idea of what (I hope....) she's looking for on this assignment.. if i'm totally off on it.. please let me know and I'll re-do it. haha.
It's okay to sound like a complete outsider if you are one. Jessica, good point about this essay representing only a certain ten-year-old boy from a very certain background. That may be an issue. Perhaps Orlean should call the essay "The Suburban American Male at Age Ten." She really only breifly mentions this issue.
