They Say/I Say Reading Response

The "Don't be a hit-and-run Quoter" reading was a refresher of material from English 101 last semester, and this type of quoting was something we covered quite extensively. Re-reading it was very useful, however, and it is a helpful guide in using other people's words to add substance to your own ideas. Using quotes from other people and authors really makes you have to think about what you're writing, and using someone else's ideas to support your own. As the author states in this piece, "We suggest getting in the habit of following every major quotation with explanatory sentences...". In order to show that you truly understand what the other person is saying, it's important to write your own thoughts on what the quote means for you. Using this method to support an argument or any other idea is necessary to understand what you're writing about.
